Joe Bailey shares with Denise Holland his new book – THRIVING IN THE EYE OF THE HURRICANE – UNLOCKING RESILIENCE IN TURBULENT TIMES.

“There are no mistakes, there is only the revelation of the inner self”

JOE BAILEY’S LIFE PURPOSE IS TO HELP PEOPLE FIND TRUE HAPPINESS AND PEACE OF MIND.

Towards this end, he studied psychology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, eventually becoming a licensed psychologist. For the past forty-six years, Joe’s desire to understand the connection between–

  • Psychological
  • Physical
  • Spiritual

facets of human beings has pulled him into a deeper understanding of the whole person and away from the current fragmented view. His search led to a health-based approach to counseling, prevention programs, workplace wellness and the attainment of a personal life of peace, joy and fulfillment for all people called Three Principles Psychology, when he met his mentor Sydney Banks in 1980. Sydney continued to mentor and inspire Joe for the next 29 years on a paradigm shift for the field of psychology.

In his career, Joe has worked–

  • Marriage and family counselor
  • University teacher
  • Trainer of therapists
  • Author
  • Consultant to organizations

He has been a pioneer in his profession, weaving together ideas and insights on psychology and spirituality. In his twenties, he became a trainer of counselors in family therapy and addictions and introduced ideas of primary prevention of addictions to the treatment profession. Over the next thirty-five years, Joe helped pioneer a revolutionary new psychology, Three Principles Psychology, which focused on seeing and actualizing health rather than the current disease model. These principles form the basis for psychology as a principle-based paradigm rather than our current fragmented view.

Bringing a new psychological paradigm into the healthcare work place

Joe brought this psychological paradigm into the work place, especially healthcare. He helps organizations appreciate the importance of the mental well-being of their employees and managers in order to create healthy and productive organizations. This approach was used as a model, by Joe and other faculty members, to create “The Inner Life of Healers” program at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where Joe was an adjunct faculty member. Joe also developed a pilot program at the Mayo Clinic Arizona called the Arizona Resiliency Program, to develop a burnout prevention program based on the principles and resiliency called The Arizona Resiliency Program. He has also worked with hospital systems to affect culture change in East Lansing Michigan and North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis.

Joe’s first book, The Serenity Principle (Harper Collins, 1990) has had a significant impact on the treatment of thousands of clients and addiction professionals throughout the world. His best selling book, Slowing Down to the Speed of Life (co-authored with Richard Carlson, Harper San Francisco, 1997) and later The Speed Trap (Harper San Francisco, 1999) were other expressions of his approach in and out of the work place. In these books he communicates the principles of living and realizing inner peace and health and how to transcend a major problem facing our society—the frenetic pace of life and stress. Joe’s fourth book, Slowing Down to the Speed of Love, was an accumulation of his life’s realizations that take the reader to practically live their life from their true self and shows them how this awareness impacts all of their relationships. Joe’s fifth book, Fearproof Your Life, was released in 2007 (Conari Press), and was written in response to the wave of fear that has swept our culture in this new century. Joe is currently working on a book exploring the common thread of the three principles in transformational experiences people have had through understanding the 3 Principles and also spontaneously throughout history called The Transformation Principle.

Grayson Hart

I enjoyed speaking with Denise about the mind and performance. The conversations were very insightful and always had me challenging and questioning the status quo regarding mental performance. The critical pointer Denise gave was that our natural state is freedom of mind, clarity and potential. We don’t need to overexert the mind to find these states. Searching for them often leads us further into tension. I found this very relatable to direct experiences in life and sport.

Mark Harris

I reached out to Denise when my world seemed to be falling apart. I had recently received a diagnosis of two different types of cancer; my son was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and had little time to live. I did not know how to process all of this, and my mental state spiralled! Within ten minutes of quiet time with Denise, I felt everything lifting from my shoulders and a feeling of calm settling in its place. Working with Denise has given me a deeper understanding and knowledge of the mind, it keeps me on a healthy path not only in general day-to-day life but as a life skill in my work environment and sport. Forever grateful to you, Denise.

Denise Holland is one of my best “students.” She is one of the few students I have asked to teach with me, and I was and remain very impressed with her presence, her knowledge, her wisdom, her feeling and her responsiveness. I would say anyone who works with Denise is in excellent hands.

Charles Mayhew

After a close family member benefitted hugely, I decided to work with Denise. It transformed my perspective and how I now live my life, clear-minded and knowing what’s truly important to me, which is so relaxing and enriching. I used to live in a place of “It’ll be better when”, so I was never present. “When I’ve sold the business..!” “When I’ve retired..!” When I’ve bought this house or car etc…..!” This program has given me my life back!

Matthew Roberts

I was fortunate enough to have a conversation with Denise over a cup of coffee when we met in America. It would be easy to accuse me of exaggeration or sensationalising by making the following statement, but I can only offer you the truth as I see it. The truth is that those few minutes changed my life. I had spent the last 15 years pursuing peak performance, competing internationally in the High jump and achieving a lifetime best of 2.26m. Through my love of this sport, I became a seeker, wanting to uncover the truth of the mind and how to reach that flow state. I’m not saying that I’m now enlightened, but I know that a beautiful, peaceful, loving state is only one thought away, for that, you have my complete and utter gratitude.”

Vicky Norman

Meeting Denise was perfect timing, written in the stars, foretold, whatever. My world was falling apart, my marriage had ended, my child was in serious trouble, and I was upping sticks and moving up North to run the biggest, most complex project of my career.
Four months later, my project is an astonishing success, my marriage is back on track, and best of all, my baby is coming back to me. I am different at work, at home, inside my head, and others can see it. The dark days aren’t dark any more because they don’t last, and the light days are far more frequent. Denise’s workj isn’t just amazing in the world of sport but any area of life.
